Membership Eligibility
Benefits of Membership
Members enjoy opportunities to:
Participate in historical and educational programs
Attend Society meetings and events
Support preservation projects and charitable initiatives
Access genealogical resources
Connect with individuals who share an interest in Colonial history
Promote historical awareness within their communities
The Society recognizes descendants of individuals who rendered distinguished military, naval, civil, or governmental service within the American colonies prior to the Revolutionary War, beginning with the settlement of Jamestown, Virgina, May 13, 1607, and preceding the battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775. Membership serves as both a tribute to those ancestors and a commitment to preserving their legacy for future generations.
Qualifying service may include military or naval service, colonial government or legislative service, and other positions of recognized responsibility within the colonies during the qualifying period. Applicants must be able to document both their ancestor’s qualifying service and the direct line of descent connecting them to that ancestor. Because each family history is unique, the Society’s Registrar is available to discuss potential eligibility and assist prospective members in understanding the research and documentation required. The Society welcomes inquiries from individuals who believe they may have a qualifying Colonial ancestor and encourages them to explore their family history while maintaining the historical standards established by the General Society of Colonial Wars.
